A town on two rivers
Thetford sits in south-west Norfolk, where the Little Ouse and the River Thet meet. Flint buildings and riverside paths run through the town, with pine forest and open Breckland countryside close by.
King Street and White Hart Street are good places to start exploring, with shops, cafés and services within reach of the river. The town also serves nearby Norfolk villages, so this directory covers businesses across the surrounding area as well as the centre.
Layers of local history
The flint ruins of Thetford Priory recall the town’s importance in medieval East Anglia. Today the open grounds offer a chance to trace the outline of the former monastery and see its surviving walls and arches.
Ancient House, in a Tudor building, explores Thetford and the Brecks, including connections with the Duleep Singh family. The Charles Burrell Museum tells the story of the town’s engineering industry and the engines made here.
Shops, cafés and the riverside
The centre is a place for everyday errands as well as a visit: independent shops, places to eat and local services sit alongside the historic streets. A walk by the Little Ouse makes a pleasant break between stops.
For a visit by car, Breckland Council lists its town car parks online. From a central starting point, you can explore the shops and riverside on foot.
Villages close to town
Kilverstone and Croxton sit close to Thetford. To the east are Brettenham, Bridgham and Roudham, with East Harling providing another local centre for shops and services. Each has its own community, with businesses serving the villages as well as the town.
Towards the forest and the western villages
Mundford and Lynford sit towards the forest, while Feltwell, Hockwold, Weeting, Foulden, Northwold and Methwold extend the area covered by this directory to the west and north-west. Browse by village to find a nearby business, or look across the district for a service that comes to you.
