Begin with a walk through the town
Start around King Street and White Hart Street, then wander towards the Little Ouse for a change of pace. The historic streets, shops and riverside make an easy combination for a few hours in town.
Leave time for a café, pub or restaurant along the way. The food and retail listings can help you find a stop close to the places you want to explore.
Explore the priory at your own pace
Thetford Priory’s ruined flint walls and surviving arches give a sense of the scale of the medieval monastery. It is an outdoor heritage stop that pairs well with a walk through town.
English Heritage provides visitor information for the site, including access and opening arrangements. Wear shoes suited to the uneven ground.
Choose a museum that matches your interests
Ancient House explores the history of Thetford and the Brecks, while the Charles Burrell Museum focuses on engines and the town’s engineering heritage. Dad’s Army Museum celebrates the television series and its local filming connections.
Choose the story that interests you most, or return for another museum on a later visit. Check opening dates before setting out, as some venues open on a limited or seasonal basis.
Explore Thetford Forest
High Lodge, between Thetford and Brandon, is a starting point for exploring Thetford Forest. Waymarked walking and cycling routes, play areas and other activities make it a different kind of outing from a day in town.
Plan the journey to High Lodge separately from a town-centre walk. Forestry England’s website has trail information, access details and parking arrangements to help you choose a visit that suits your group.
Leave space for local events and village stops
The Carnegie’s programme and the activities at the Charles Burrell Centre offer more reasons to spend time locally. Look out for performances, clubs and community events alongside the town’s museums and heritage sites.
For another day, explore Mundford, Kilverstone or East Harling and the businesses around them. A village stop and a meal nearby can be an outing in their own right.
